With the recent news that products that contains BPA may be harmful to our health, stores across Canada and some parts of the USA are taking these plastic bottles, sippys, and other products off the shelf.
In the meantime, you probably have some of bottles and sippy cups that do contain BPA’s. An easy way to spot them is to look at the bottom of the bottle or cup and look for the recycling symbol. If it has a 7 in it, it contains BPA’s. You will want to keep the bottles that have the numbers 2, 4, or 5. **It seems that not all #7 plastics contain BPA’s, however many do, so refer to the list for safe alternatives.
What is BPA? BPA stands for Bisphenol A and is a harmful chemical found in polycarbonate plastic which has been used to make baby bottles, sippy cups, and other such plastics.
Why is BPA Harmful? BPA mimics the human hormone estrogen, and when humans are exposed to even small quantities it has effects that include cancers, behavior disorders, and fertility issues. BPA Free Baby Products from Amazon

My personal opinion on the matter of BPA’s is even though there is a lot of media “hype”, even if there is just the slightest risk from the presence in baby and other plastic products it is worth it to me to make the switch. There are many plastics that do not contain any traces of BPA’s it is an inexpensive change.

Just a quick comment….not all #7 plastics contain BPA’s as they are not all polycarbonate plastic. The #7 designation includes other types of plastics as well, not only ones containing BPA.
Just so everyone knows, consumers are not expoed to enough BPA to even be worried about it! I feel that the media is making a huge deal about nothing at all! I am a mother and was concerned until i read the reports on the consumer reports. I just feel that with many other things, the media made it out to be a huge deal. I rarely watch the news just for that reason.

To respond to Alyse’s comment, she has a point. The media is adding a bit of sensationalism to the whole ordeal and causing people to panic more than what is truly necessary. However, there have been many new studies done and the effects, while not completely conclusive, are enough to make the FDA re-evaluate their stance as well as Canada to deem it a dangerous substance. There is something unsettling about that as a parent and a consumer.
While you aren’t going to see any immediate dangerous effects from exposure, even at small amounts… there is no telling how it could affect a person later in life. Many parents are switching to BPA Free more for peace of mind. If you can avoid it, affordably, then why not avoid it? It can’t hurt you to use a safer product… it may hurt you if you don’t. There is no telling. But people don’t want to take that chance.
In an effort to be a responsible parent, I called Sassy, as I was about to order a new combination sippy cup/snack container for my toddler. They told me there is a trace of BPA in the mechanism that covers the straw feature, although there is no BPA in the cup potions. This site has the cup, (Sassy Snack Time Infa-Trainer Cup) listed here as BPA-free. Please advise!
