Safety is most important when carving your pumpkin. Have your little one help you will the scooping so they do not feel left out when you are doing the actual carving. Use battery powered “candles” to prevent burns and fires. We use the Glade Wisp Flameless Candles in our big pumpkin. You can take these out of their glass container and still use them in smaller pumpkins. When Halloween is over, you still have a nice smelling flameless candle to use in your home.

I just found another great website with some fun Halloween activities especially for toddlers.

Playhouse Disney has a new page of activities for their Trick or Treat Weekend.

Playhouse Disney Trick or Treat Weekend Activities

A traditional activity around Halloween is pumpkin carving. Have fun this year by making this a family project you can do together with your toddler.

While your toddler won’t do the actual carving of the pumpkin let them help pick out the design and help scoop out the seeds.

I would suggest buying one of those cheap pumpkin carving kits at the grocery store that contain a little scoop and carver (which usually isn’t too sharp).

Also check out your alternatives to using votives/tealights to light up your pumpkin. You do not want your little one getting burned by their curiosity of the light. They now have battery operated lights that you usually can find cheap at Wal-Mart or Target.

Have Fun & Enjoy!

Going out trick or treating might be a new experience for you and your toddler (especially if this is your first child). Making the most of this time by playing it safe by using some of these Halloween safety tips.

- Use reflective tape on your toddlers costume, or choose lighter colors that can be noticed in the dark. If you are pushing a stroller add reflective tape to that too.

- Give your toddler a glow stick to hold, or wear around their neck. Parent supervision is always required. This would be for your “older” toddlers, little ones might try to chew on the glow stick (bad idea)

- Watch for the length of your toddlers costume, you wouldn’t want them tripping and falling down. Also make sure the costume is flame-retardant.

- Only go trick or treating to homes where you know the occupants. Also check with your local malls and parks to see if they are hosting any special events on Halloween.

- Buy or make a trick or treat bag that will be deep enough for the candy not to spill out and easy for your toddler to hold on too.

- Check all candy before letting your toddler eat any. Throw away suspicious or opened candy

- Have fun, take pictures, and create some special memories!
